There’s an ongoing battle for ownership of the mega-million dollar newspaper, Newsday. The company launched by Daniel Chookolingo in 1993, is getting no media publicity because two years after its launch, the daily immediately became the fastest selling newspaper in Trinidad and Tobago outstripping the then 30-year old Trinidad Express and the mighty Guardian which was then over 75 years old. Both newspaper and their vast billion dollar media outfits have remained silent since the case was filed in the High Court in 2014.While Newsday’s up-to-date value remains shrouded, there was a valuation done a decade ago which put its worth at over $200 million dollars. Sources close to Mr Chookolingo says this is a bogus value which was given by the Steve Castagne controlled board to buy out minority shareholders to gain full control of his company.

Gregory Aboud Gary Aboud Jwala Rambarran
I have unsuccessfully tried to get this message published in the dailies as I was disgusted by an article written by Gregory Aboud in the Express (see below) dated 3rd July 2022. I was not surprised that it was not seen to be fit by the editors of three dailies which are owned by the same One Percenters whose agenda is to defend and to promote themselves first and foremost.
I only recently stumbled on this site that showed (for those who didn’t know) how the One Percent operates. TTJusticeFoundation showed how High Court Judge James Aboud, brother of Gregory Aboud of DOMA, his organ of propaganda, and Gary Aboud of FFOS, also his organ propaganda, who were all worried back in the day when 2 of their buildings, one in T&T and one on Canada, were both burnt down on the same day. Back then they kept a low profile. Now with the billions they have amassed through the various activities, whatever that may be, they feel they have a God-given right to make a sick One Percent spin on everything. This demented article by Gregory explains everything about these ‘exemplars’ in T&T. And that’s what the media has portrayed them to be, exemplars.
In case people missed it, Judge Gary Aboud while he was adjudicating on a case before him, (Mr Daniel Chookolingo was the Claimant) made a startling revelation in the courtroom. He said he discussed the Chookolingo matter with his relatives, one can only assume that he meant Gregory and Gary, well known One Percenters and propaganda experts if nothing else. The family is one of the biggest landlords in T&T and maybe even Canada. Maybe nothing is wrong with that!
So the Judge said one of his relatives told him to go ‘easy’ on Chookolingo …whatever that means. In addition to that open, if not misinformed and misguided revelation about his family discussion, James came to Court and totally trashed Mr Chookolingo calling him all kinds of names that had nothing to do with the case if that is what ‘going easy’ meant. One is left to wonder if he wasn’t ‘cautioned’ by his family member what would have transpired.
The law states that Judges are not to discuss their cases with family members, whether they are One Percent or not. All attempts by Chookolingo to raise this injustice to in the Court of Appeal were dismissed with the exception of Justice des Vignes who saw that Chookolingo was being railroaded. He suddenly resigned soon after that and died an untimely death. Then, we learn that the highest Judge in the land, CJ Archie, sat on the final appeal and heard the attorney for Chookolingo, Raj Joseph, now the Ombudsman, which was also branded ‘misbehaviour in public office’ because Mr Joseph was a retired high court judge up until 2018. The law states it is unlawful for a former Judge to appear in court for 10 years after retirement as a judge. It seems that Chookolingo’s appeal to the Disciplinary Committee is pending but he can rest ‘easy’ that the Disciplinary Committee is made up of a numbers of senior attorneys who will protect the One Percenters, their clients and friends.
So, to cement the point, the Aboud family broke the law and are protected to the max by fellow One Percenters and people who depend on them for big legal briefs, and now Gregory (maybe it was Gregory who told the judge to go ‘easy’ which must be an euphemism for something else) writes a disgusting and insane article about how former Central Bank Governor, Mr Rambarran, is a nasty partisan man for telling the public about who got the most forex from the country’s dwindling reserves. He further states it was probably the UNC government that used up most of it and Rambarran was blaming the ‘force for good’, the innocent One Percent. He even said “in my respectful view” disagreeing with the Court that Rambarran was the victim.
He said to my disbelief that the One Percent made regular complaints about the shortage of Forex and said this is proof of their innocence. Well, Mr Aboud, the Finance Intelligence Unit (FIU) has been saying ever since their formation in 2009, that billions of dollars have been flagged every year since then. In 2020, the FIU said there was over $27 billion (not million) dollars of suspicious activity in that year, that is well over half of the T&T annual budget. What is curious is that the suspicious activity spiked in 2017 from hundreds of thousands to billions of dollars, which was when the PNM came into office and Gregory only pointed to the fact that the Government (UNC) must be the one using up the Forex and Rambarran was blaming the innocent and misunderstood One Percent. So, was it the man in the street that was sending these billions overseas? The Aboud’s slips are showing and their intentions smell to the high heaven...a place he will never see so he can stop pretending to be ‘Christian’ do-gooder. What must be the truth is that the firing of Rambarran was a message to the head of the FIU, Susan Francois sister of the late Dana Seetahal, to keep her trap shut or face the same consequences. And just maybe it was the One Percent that killed Seetahal as a serious lesson to Susan …the stakes being so high? One can check another story I saw on TTJusticeFoundation headlined ‘Call For a C.O.E….On A Man Called Sheriff’ which states to what lengths the One Percent will go to run the country.
It is well known that the Syrian One Percent is a breed apart and that during the 1980s Central Bank allocation system (ECO and EC1) they normally sold their ‘unused allocation’ to their own clan, making it a business venture on its own without actually importing anything but just from having the ability to obtain Forex from their banking friends and associates. Isn’t that what is going on today? They get Forex and just sell it just like a business just because they have the ability to get it? ….Isn’t that the same One Percent that have been complaining about the lack of Forex … just to sound like they are also subject to the ‘shortage’ just like the small business? Come again Gregory.
His One Percent friends and family may think he is doing them a favour when he defends the dirty names of the One Percent but in reality he is only hiding behind a few of the good ones, maybe to protect his past or to divert the attention off of his law-breaking brother, Judge Aboud. Furthermore, the class discord he talks about is of their own making when they drive million dollar Mercedes and BMWs, live on 20 million dollars mansions with 24 hour security and own many more under rental, travel abroad on shopping sprees like they are going to Mayaro, etc, etc, etc. The three Abouds have no moral or legal right to lecture to us, lesser working class and plebs.
But, I’m not surprised that his brother James was made a Court of Appeal Judge soon after this brouhaha? We shall see what his next assignment is on behalf of his family and other One Percenters. It would be best if the Abouds would exit public life sooner rather than later. They should really be called The Three stink Abouds.
